  1. Q. What is gluten? Is it in all foods?
    A.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and is widely used in many foods, including:

    • Dough (breads, crackers, muffins, bagels, cookies, pie crust, croutons)
    • Pasta and noodles made from wheat flour
    • Gravies, sauces, salad dressings and soy sauce
    • Snack foods like pretzels and cereals
    • Beer
    • Breaded and fried foods
    • Everyday products such as medicines, vitamins and even lip balms

Not all grains contain gluten—wild rice, corn, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, oats, soybeans and sunflower seeds are gluten free.

  2. Q. Does everyone need to avoid gluten?
    A.

Not everyone needs to avoid gluten. Individuals who have been medically diagnosed with gluten intolerance, sensitivity and celiac disease need to avoid gluten. These individuals have an inherited autoimmune disease in which the lining of the small intestine is damaged by consuming gluten, even in trace amounts. If you must follow a gluten free diet, consult with your physician and a registered dietitian to determine which foods may be right for you.

  3. Q. How do I know if a product is gluten free?
    A.

A gluten free diet can be especially challenging—some food ingredients are obvious to avoid, while others are difficult to spot. If a food is not labeled as gluten free, avoid the food completely. Look for pre-packaged items clearly marked by the manufacturer as gluten free. The safest way to determine if a product is gluten free is to contact the manufacturer directly. Most major companies will provide a list of gluten free products to consumers.

    A.

Please inform our staff at the deli counter that you need gluten free products. We use a dedicated slicer, knife and cutting board for gluten free products. Of course, prepackaged deli meats marked by the manufacturer as gluten free are also available as a safe alternative.
