Giant Eagle® receives ENERGY STAR® Award for Sustained Excellence
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Giant Eagle®, Inc. a 2009 ENERGY STAR® Award for
Sustained Excellence for our continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency. Giant
Eagle's® accomplishments were recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 31. An ENERGY STAR®
partner since 2001, Giant Eagle® was honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency as demonstrated
throughout our operations, by the installation of new energy-efficient lighting technology, the purchase of
wind-generated electricity and education of Team Members on how they can save energy.
Giant Eagle® has been honored at the ENERGY STAR® Awards ceremony for the past six years. In addition to
this year's award, we have been recognized with the Sustained Excellence Award in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and a
Partner of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005.
Across the United States, top companies and organizations are continuing to promote energy efficiency through
participation in ENERGY STAR®. Last year alone Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR®, saved $19 billion on their
energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 29 million vehicles.
"Conserving resources through sound energy management is a priority for us at Giant Eagle®," said Giant Eagle®
Energy Manager Cliff Timko. "As an ENERGY STAR® Partner, we strive to achieve superior energy performance in our
organization. This program delivers energy efficiencies and cost savings to Giant Eagle®, but more importantly,
it is good for the environment."
The 2009 Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding
leadership year after year. These recipients have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive
goals, employing innovative approaches and showing others what can be achieved through energy efficiency. These awards
recognize ongoing leadership across the ENERGY STAR® program including energy-efficient products, services, new homes
and buildings in the commercial, industrial and public sectors. Award recipients are selected from more than 12,000
organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR® program.
"EPA is delighted to recognize Giant Eagle®, Inc. with the 2009 ENERGY STAR® Sustained Excellence award," said Kathleen
Hogan, Director of the Climate Protection Partnerships Division at the EPA. "Giant Eagle's® leadership on energy efficiency
has yielded impressive results for their bottom line and our global environment, showing us all what can be accomplished
through sustained commitment and action."
