German Cheese
Germany's large dairy industry produces a number of cheeses well-known within the nation's borders. However, few people living outside of Germany know them — they've become overshadowed by the world-renowned cheeses produced by many of Germany's bordering countries, including France and Switzerland.
Delicious German cheese varieties
- Bavarian Cheese is a semi-soft, cow's milk cheese that's smoked over beech wood. This smoking process gives the cheese a unique, aromatic flavor. A dark rind encases the rich cheese, which melts easily for perfect grilled cheeses and uniquely flavored macaroni and cheese.
- Cambozola Cheese combines the flavors of two popular cheeses — Brie and Blue Cheese — with a smooth, creamy texture, a rind, and a seam of blue-green lines. Cambozola makes a perfect sweet or savory treat, whether it's paired with fruit or cooked in a creamy pasta sauce.
- Alpenjoy is a soft, mild cow's milk cheese flecked with cured meat. A German-cuisine favorite, Germans enjoy this cheese with picked relishes and strong mustard.
- Champignon is a double crème Brie with mushrooms. The mushrooms give the buttery Brie earthy undertones, which intensify with age.
- Mirabo Walnut is a type of soft-ripened cow's milk cheese with crushed walnuts.
- Bavarian Swiss is mellow and nutty with large eyes, or holes.
Try these cheeses in a sandwich or dish. Or, enjoy them like the Germans do — with a dark beer, fresh fruit, and some dark, crusty bread.
