From grapefruit for breakfast to sweet blood oranges for an afternoon break — citrus fruits are much-appreciated gifts, and pack a big nutritional punch.
At Giant Eagle®, we pride ourselves on stocking citrus fruits that please everyone in the family — and add excitement to every meal or snack.
Our varieties include:
Blood Oranges
With distinctive bright red or red-streaked white flesh, the sweetly tart flavor of a blood orange may remind you of raspberries or red wine. These oranges are sized small to medium and contain few or no seeds — making them convenient for recipes or out-of-hand eating.
Most blood oranges are best eaten fresh, but more acidic varieties like the Maltese work well in cooked sauces. For mealtime appeal, cut blood orange segments into bite-size pieces; mix with avocado and spices for guacamole; combine with diced, cooked shrimp and lettuce in a salad, or mix with minced chiles and cilantro for an exotic salsa.
Red Grapefruit
With a touch of pink on the skin and that lively, tart taste, grapefruit is a breakfast classic — especially when pre-cut and ready to eat. Grapefruit is also an excellent match for rich-tasting ingredients, including avocado or salmon in salads. Since grapefruit is one of the juiciest fruits in the citrus family, try adding a splash of it in place of lemon juice or vinegar, or combine orange and grapefruit juice with a dash of cayenne pepper to marinate chicken or shrimp.
Navel Oranges
The button end on this citrus fruit tells you you're getting a navel orange — with seedless flesh and a distinctive orange flavor. When selecting navel oranges, look for a slight shine on a blemish-free peel. The fruit should also be firm, and heavy for its size.
To encourage young children to try navel oranges, do a little prep work first: Cut the top and bottom off (so the orange sits flat); then remove the peel and pith with a knife before cutting the orange into individual segments.
Navel oranges are also a delightful addition to salads. Try the almost-instant combination of canned black beans, oranges, and minced chiles, or wake up leftover chicken by pairing it with orange segments and romaine lettuce.
Cara Cara Navel Oranges
This large orange looks much like the traditional navel variety, but underneath its orange peel lies a rosy, pink flesh and a flavor reminiscent of strawberries or raspberries. Cara Cara orange segments are delicious when combined with sliced bananas in a fruit salad; when topped with vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt or ricotta cheese for breakfast, or when drizzled with honey or brown sugar for dessert.
Valencia Oranges
Sweet, juicy, and containing very few seeds, the Valencia orange is perfect for juicing and is delicious when eaten fresh. Its thin, deep-golden skin is often difficult to peel, but it's worth the effort when you want a sweet snack. Try blending Valencia orange juice with frozen vanilla yogurt and bananas or strawberries for a scrumptious smoothie.
