Snow Crab Clusters: Cooking Tips

Crab legs and lemon wedges

Handling Snow Crab

A crab claw dipped in melted butterSince snow crabs are cooked after they're caught, you don't need to cook them — just heat them. To eliminate excess water, try cooking your snow crab in the oven, on the grill, or on the broiler — we've provided tips for all three!

Thawing Snow Crab

Thaw frozen snow crab in the refrigerator one day prior to cooking. If you don't have time to thaw overnight, you can run the crab under cold, running water. Quick tip: Determine if the crab is fully thawed by squeezing the biggest section of the leg.

Steaming Snow Crab

  • Cover thawed legs; steam 6-8 minutes.

Boiling Snow Crab

  • Bring a pan of water to a boil.
  • Add seasonings or spices to taste.
  • Place snow crab in the pan and reduce heat to a simmer.
  • Simmer for 6-8 minutes.

Baking Snow Crab

  • Make a double sheet of aluminum foil and thoroughly wrap your crab legs in the foil.
  • Poke a small hole in the foil for steam to escape.
  • If crab is frozen: Bake at 450°F for approximately 14-16 minutes.
  • If crab is thawed: Bake at 450°F for 8-10 minutes.

Quick tip: Allow extra cooking time for large crab clusters.

Grilling Snow Crab

  • Make a double sheet of aluminum foil and thoroughly wrap your crab legs in the foil.
  • Make sure the foil packet is firmly sealed — do not poke holes in it.
  • Set grill heat to medium-high.
  • Place the foil packet 4"-6" away from heat.
  • Grill for 14-16 minutes. (Cooking time varies, depending upon your grill.)

Broiling Snow Crab

  • Place crab legs on a baking sheet.
  • Place the baking sheet 7"-8" from broiler.
  • Broil for approximately 6-8 minutes.
