The economy has been tough, but when it comes to grocery shopping there has been speculation that the crunch may be encouraging people to eat healthier. Imagine this:
- Some are discovering that they can afford more fruits, vegetables, organically grown foods, whole grains and lean proteins if they cut down on things like beer and chips.
- Eating at home is in! Save money by grilling a piece of meat, chicken or fish with some seasonal vegetables. Best of all, you control the fat and sodium content!
Being a supermarket-based dietitian, I think this is great incentive to learn to cook or at least expand your food choices. Here are some starters:
- This is the season where there are great deals on fruits, veggies, meat, fish and poultry for the grill, which are all healthy options. Your Giant Eagle® staff has the recipes and the ideas to get you started or just ask (nutritionist@GiantEagle.com).
- Involve the family in taking the foods on special to new adventures in food. Get creative and discover how many ways can you serve carrots beyond the ranch dip.
- Think outside the box to vegetarian meals, ways to keep higher cost items on the menu without breaking the budget and ideas for two or more meals out of a steak, chicken or other protein items. Planned-overs are more exciting than leftovers!
- Look for simple recipes or serving ideas with instructions for preparing the food if you are intimidated by the idea of cooking. Adding herbs or using simple marinades are easy ways to add new depth to the foods you serve and keep the cost down. And they fit the idea of cooking for health as well as flavor.
- Invest in some basics like herbs, olive oil, flavored vinegar and a grated cheese to add interesting flavor and create great meals.
