Preserve and Store Foods This August

Long before the era of grocery stores, during hard economic times, people cooked, preserved and stored their own foods. Due to the current uncertain economy, learning to preserve your own food will keep your favorite seasonal flavors close at hand year-round, and save you money, too.

As consumer awareness of sustainability increases, cooking is making a comeback — along with emphasis on locally grown produce, gardens and our own "sugar rationing." From a health standpoint, these are positives when it comes to getting the maximum nutritional value from your food. Also, it’s a great reason to enjoy time and bond with friends and family.

So, let's look at some ways that cooking, preserving and storing food can benefit your health and wallet!

  • Emphasize foods in season — This is the time to include fruits and vegetables in our diets at the highest level...especially vegetables. These are sources of fiber, certain plant nutrients that seem to have a protective effect, and of course, vitamins and minerals.
  • Buy local — Supermarkets and farmers' markets are stocked with foods that are harvested at peak taste and nutrition. In the north, this is a short season, so featuring these foods in your meals makes sense and can save dollars.
  • Learn to preserve — Most of us don't preserve and store foods! But it is easier than ever to freeze foods. Check out the freezer bags, containers and canning supplies available at the supermarket. Why not buy in season and have the pleasure of these foods into the colder seasons? If you have canning equipment, make sure it is safe to use and outfitted with new rings and seals.
  • Think meals that take advantage of the season — Make enough to freeze for another meal or more. Grilled vegetables, homemade pesto or salsa (to use those extra tomatoes), and homemade tomato sauce or soup are ideas that you and your friends can make as a group and share the wealth for the freezer or pantry.
