Keep It Fresh: Seafood Storage and Handling Tips

Fresh from your Giant Eagle® seafood experts, we present guidelines for safe handling and storage of seafood.

Fresh seafood safety tips:

  • Use all fresh seafood within 1-2 days.
  • Store fresh fish in the upper section of the refrigerator, or in the meat keeper at 32°F.
  • Place dry, dressed fish in a dish — then wrap loosely with foil or cling wrap.
  • Keep fresh shellfish on ice in the refrigerator.

Frozen seafood:

  • Frozen seafood can keep for up to six months at 0°F.
  • Store frozen seafood in its original wrapper.
  • Thaw frozen seafood in the refrigerator, in the microwave — or placed the frozen seafood in an airtight bag and immerse it in water.
  • Use frozen seafood immediately after thawing it — do not thaw and re-freeze.

Cooked seafood:

  • Refrigerate seafood immediately after cooking.
  • Place cooked seafood in a covered container and wrap it in foil.
  • Store cooked seafood no longer than three days in the refrigerator, or three months in the freezer.
