2009 was one of the toughest economic years on record, and 2010 could be just as challenging. Fortunately, even if money is tight this year, you can provide the holiday's delights for your family — without doing damage to your wallet.
Remember the reason for the season
During the holiday season, it can be tempting to spend beyond your means. But remember — the holidays are about spending time with your family and friends. They're not about impressing people with expensive gifts!
Shop savvy for seasonal treats
- Before you go shopping — whether you're searching for gifts or buying ingredients for the big meal — list everything you'll need. Lists help you track the costs of your holiday activities, and allow you to keep your spending in check.
- Substitute Valu Time® and Giant Eagle® brands in your holiday recipes wherever possible. The meals will taste just as decadent — and you'll lower your grocery bill.
- Get creative with ingredients. For example, if you want to order elegant appetizer courses, but they're out of your price range, make them yourself with cheese from Giant Eagle® and Valu Time® brand add-ons.
Get help from the kids
Even if you're on a budget this year, you can treat your children to holiday indulgences. Get your children involved in holiday planning, and you'll discover new ways to save.
- If your children are younger, encourage them to focus on one item they want most. Remind them that the holiday season is a time when every child gets the chance to enjoy at least one item on his or her wish list.
- If your children are older, explain the family financial situation. Ask them for help in planning the holiday gift list and holiday activity itinerary. They'll feel indulged — and you won't overspend.
- Find what's free. For example, Giant Eagle's® Eagle's Nest offers seasonal games and crafts that children can enjoy — for free. Or, check out your local library. Public libraries offer seasonal activities that cost little or nothing — and any time you engage your children in holiday fun, the experience feels special.
- Never underestimate the power of family movie night! Giant Eagle® Redbox rentals are just $1 a night — and we carry a wide selection of seasonal flicks. Pop some popcorn, or whip up a batch of cocoa and marshmallows — and get into the holiday spirit.
If you're planning this holiday season on a budget, don't stress — you can still treat your family without over-spending.
