Melons are popular favorites for many, but there is always a significant difference between the juicy sweetness of a ripe piece of melon and one that is not quite ready to be eaten. We're here to help you pick the perfect melon and to share some ideas on how to prepare it.
Food Safety and Cantaloupes

Basil and Lime Melon Salad
This refreshing salad combines the sweetness of the melon with the delicate peppery hints of basil and the tanginess of lime. It is sure to become a favorite amongst guests and family alike!
How to Pick the Perfect Melon
Honeydew:
- Check the weight – the melon should feel heavier than it looks.
- A ripe honeydew has a nice even yellow hue to it – there should not be any green.
- If you press on its stem, it should be firm with a slight amount of give.
Cantaloupe:
- Look for nice even browning with a golden hue – there should not be much green on the outside.
- The stem should be slightly sunken in, and when you press on it, it should give in, but spring back. The stem should not feel mushy.
How to Select and Cut a Melon
- Start with a washed melon and cut off both ends.
- Stand it up on one of the cut ends and peel the melon using a thin bladed knife. Follow the shape of the fruit and remove the rind (including the green part) from the flesh.
- Cut the melon in half to expose the seeds and scoop out the seeds using a spoon. If the melon is ripe enough, the seeds will fall right out once you loosen them around the edges.
- Slice one half of the melon long–wise into 2–inch strips. Turn it a quarter of a way and slice into 2–inch pieces for a perfectly diced melon. Repeat with the other half.
