Good News About Card Expiration and Fees!

This information applies to cards purchased between August 22, 2010 and January 31, 2011. If you buy a card between these dates, keep the receipt or (for a gift) give the receipt to the card recipient, because the receipt will show the purchase date.

  • If a card has an expiration date, and that date is less than 5 years after the purchase date:
    • The unredeemed value (funds) accessible thru the card will NEVER expire
  • If a card has a dormancy fee, inactivity fee, or service fee (a periodic fee or charge for holding or use of the card) stated on the card or packaging, the issuer may not charge that dormancy, inactivity, or service fee unless the amount and frequency of the fee are clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the card; the card has been inactive for 12 continuous months before the fee is imposed (in each instance); only one such periodic fee is charged in any month; and the card has a toll-free telephone number and (if applicable) a Web site where the cardholder can obtain information about these fees.
  • Certain one-time fees (such as properly disclosed initial purchase fees, lost/stolen replacement card fees and cash-out fees) are permitted.

PLEASE NOTE: These provisions do not apply to general purpose reloadable cards (such as PayPower, ONLY1, or similar reloadable cards), admissions or ticket cards, and long distance calling cards, and other prepaid cards useable solely for telephone services. If your card does not comply with the CARD Act of 2009 (U.S. Public Law 111-24), you are entitled (upon request to the card issuer) to a free replacement card (in the amount of unredeemed value accessible thru the card) and related materials that do comply with the CARD Act. If you have questions about card expiration or fees, please call the number or visit the Web site on the back of the card.
