Building Blocks to a Better Diet

Please note: Our new nutritional tagging system is currently available in our Columbus, Ohio and Frederick, Maryland stores.

Using Our New Tags to Make More Nutritious Choices

With just a few changes to your shopping and cooking routines, you can make the dietary choices that are right for your family, and increase the nutritional value of your everyday meals.

Look. You'll find the double-hex NuVal™ symbol in the upper right corner on shelf tags, opposite the price, of thousands of products throughout Giant Eagle®. The product's Score, from 1-100, is prominently featured inside the hex. The multicolored dietary info blocks are located at the bottom of the tag.

Compare. Now, you can comparison shop for nutrition just as quickly and easily as for price. With just a glance, you can see which brand of peanut butter has a higher NuVal™ Score, which is lower in sodium and which is low in saturated fats, and choose accordingly.

Trade up. Choose for Score or choose for specific nutritional attributes — but also choose amply from those categories — like fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains — that give you the most nutritional bang for your buck. Use the USDA's MyPlate guidelines as the standard for portioning your meals.

Making a More Informed Cereal Choice

Here's an example of how you can use the nutritional information on Giant Eagle's new tags to make choices in the cereal aisle that are better for you and your family.

Good

While this popular children's cereal is made with whole grains and is low in fat, it did not receive nutrition or lifestyle labeling due to its very high sugar content. Not ideal, but a good, occasional breakfast option.

Better

Made from whole grain oats, this cereal is also a good source of fiber. Add fresh berries and low-fat milk for a balanced breakfast!

Best

This cereal is an ideal choice for a heart-healthy breakfast food because it contains just 1g of fat, no sodium and at 47g per serving is an excellent source of whole grains.
