Save Money on Holiday Travel

Article archived: January, 2010

The holidays bring many challenges, as well as pleasures — and travel is a unique combination of both. A vacation is a well-deserved joy, but we know it can also be a financial strain. Whether you're traveling with your loved ones or exploring an exotic hot-spot, with our advice and a little planning, you can leave your budget worries behind.

Budget tips for the whole family

Whether you're traveling with a group or going solo, our budget tips will help you save on travel this season.

  • Plan ahead. Holiday trips are rarely a spontaneous surprise; more often, you know in advance when and where you're traveling. So start looking for winter holiday airfare as early as the summer before. Likewise, if you plan to take a summer holiday, this winter is the time to look for plane tickets.
  • Set a price range that's right for you. Research current airfare rates so you know what to expect. Then, you'll be prepared to move quickly if a deal shows up.
  • Consider your traveling time. For example, local rush hours can slow you down to and from the airport. And if a reduced airfare rate comes with red-eye departures or overnight layovers, decide if the time sacrifice is worth it.
  • Don't overpack! Baggage fees add up, especially if you're traveling in a group. Try to bring carry-on bags only — and be sure to double-check the maximum allowed carry-on size.
  • Consider available amenities. Airports enforce strict size limits on gels and liquids like shampoo, and your destination may have a washer, a dryer, and sample-size toiletry items — meaning you can pack lighter.
  • Plan for presents. No matter how carefully you pack, returning with gifts can mean extra luggage. Consider asking your relatives to have gifts shipped directly to your home. It may not be quite as exciting, but it certainly builds anticipation!

The right price

Airfare, resort, and hotel prices don't necessarily change dramatically, though they can vary from season to season. Rather, the lowest-priced tickets are sold first. Pricing is determined by demand and capacity — so start planning early!

Become a student of savings

This holiday season, do you just want to get away from it all? Are you yearning for a trip to an exotic locale? Your student days may have passed, but a youthful mindset can pay in dividends of savings. Try these tips, and enjoy travel on a dime.

  • Pick creative destinations. The famous hot-spots and tourist traps may sound appealing, but jaunts to just outside the area can prove more rewarding — and much more affordable.
  • Make your own memories. Decide whether the typical tourist destinations are worth the price — or if you'll have a better experience (and take better pictures) by choosing unique activities.
  • Try to stay near the area that interests you — it will dramatically cut your transportation costs.
  • Pack your own food. Save your money for the memorable meals instead of the hurried snacks. And, take advantage of free coffee and other amenities at your hotel.
  • Consider traveling to a place where you can stay with friends or relatives. You won't need to spring for a hotel room, and can reconnect with old friends. Just remember to buy nice gifts to thank your hosts.
  • You can save time or money, but when traveling, you generally can't save both. Find the right balance of savings for you.

Whether you're traveling this holiday season — or planning a big trip for the future — our travel tips will help you relax and enjoy your hard earned vacation.
