In 2009, Giant Eagle® recycled more than 124 million pounds of materials and sold attractive, reusable bags for eco-conscious shopping at all stores.
Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED®)
Giant Eagle® built the nation's first LEED®-certified supermarket, Pennsylvania's first LEED® Silver Commercial Interior Certified store, and Ohio's first LEED® Gold Certified supermarket.
ENERGY STAR®
Recognized Giant Eagle® with Sustained Excellence Award, 2006 – 2010 and as Partner of the Year, 2004-2005.
Green Power
Currently, Giant Eagle's® annual renewable power purchase is 17 million kWh a year as a member of the EPA's Green Power Partnership.
GreenChill
In 2009, recognized Giant Eagle® for having the best 2008 leak rate, achieving our 2008 target emissions and achieving our 2008 stretch emissions rate within the EPA's GreenChill membership. In 2009, our Market District® Robinson received Pennsylvania's first GreenChill Gold level certification for using green refrigeration technology.
