This is the season to enjoy regional produce, and Giant Eagle® is featuring your favorites in all of our stores. The term "regional produce" often describes foods grown within a reasonable drive time. Throughout the year, we work with regional growers and producers to bring their products to you. Now is the time you will find a larger selection than ever!
What are the benefits of regionally grown produce?
- Produce grown regionally can arrive at a store the same day it's picked. Less travel time means foods can ripen on the vine or the plant for top flavor and nutrition. You also always enjoy produce that's perfectly in season when you choose regionally grown.
- Regionally grown foods are often fresher — and it's best to eat produce at peak freshness for maximum nutritional benefit. Nutrients like Vitamin C can be lost when greens and other vegetables are allowed to wilt. The freshness not only affects the taste of your food, but also the nutritional value, which declines with time.
- Produce grown close to home means that less fuel and other resources are used during transport to your nearest Giant Eagle® store.
- Regionally grown produce boosts your community's economy! When you support a marketplace for regional farmers by choosing their produce, you help put dollars back into the economy and show support for regional agriculture.
(Note: Regionally grown foods are not all grown following certified organic guidelines. If they are, the organic certification will be noted.)
Although we believe all of our produce features excellent flavor and health benefits, our support for regionally grown produce also complements Giant Eagle's® commitment to our communities.
This harvest, enjoy the tomatoes, corn, greens, cucumbers, peppers, squash, pears, apples, and ever-growing list of regionally grown choices you will find in our stores (when available). Eating regionally grown produce provides a way to keep in touch with the regional harvest and with the flavors of summer and fall.
Remember that we bring the best to you. Once you've made your selections, protect their flavor and freshness by getting them home fast, storing them at the correct temperature, and sending them to your table in style! Grill, steam, microwave, or enjoy them raw — it's your choice.
