Shingles
Shingles — Are You At Risk?
If you're over the age of 60, take measures to protect yourself. Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). Anyone who has ever had chickenpox is at risk for shingles, a painful condition with potentially long-lasting complications. The chickenpox virus can live dormant within your body for many years after infection. If it becomes active again, it can cause shingles. As you age, your susceptibility increases.
Symptoms
A shingles rash usually appears on one side of the face or body and lasts from two to four weeks. Shingles symptoms can appear without warning and may include:
- Pain
- Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, headache)
- Blisters
- Upset stomach
