A Commitment to Our Oceans and Our Future

Responsible, sustainable fishing practices that promote the long-term health and biodiversity of our planet’s oceans and waterways are a top concern at Giant Eagle, as they are for many of our customers.


That’s why we actively partner with a number of non-government organizations, such as the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and Global Aquaculture Alliance, that set high industry standards for aquaculture practices that strive to minimize environmental impacts on our world’s fisheries.


Additionally, Greenpeace acts to communicate global marine environment needs and currently works with Giant Eagle to help refine our sustainability focus.


With their guidance, we carefully source and sell more than 60 different species of fish — both farm-raised and wild-caught — from more than 70 fisheries worldwide.

We're proud to work with the nonprofit Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to create a sustainable sourcing strategy for our wild and farmed seafood. Giant Eagle is committed to providing a wide variety of the freshest and highest quality seafood while being good stewards of the marine environment and fisheries around the world.


Additionally, we work with the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), which sets high industry standards for aquaculture practices that strive to minimize environmental impacts on our world’s fisheries. The GAA’s Best Aquiculture Practices (BAP) is a set of standards for aquaculture facilities through the production chain. Standards are set for environment, traceability, social ethics, animal welfare and food safety in the form of a 4-star rating system:

Our farm-raised salmon sourced from Canada and Chile has achieved 4-star BAP certifications. We also proudly offer 4-star BAP certified farm-raised tilapia from Honduras and BAP certified farm-raised shrimp.



How We're Helping

Our Seafood Buyers are passionate about making sure you can feel good about the seafood you take home from Giant Eagle. Every day, in sourcing seafood for more than 250 stores, we follow deeply held principles for responsible fishery management and long-term sustainability. These include:


Limiting stock depletion by sourcing a broad variety of species


Choosing species based on responsible fishery practices in addition to customer demand


Forging partnerships that allow direct access to fishermen


Actively supporting many Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), including, but not limited to:


  • Advocating awareness and overall industry improvements via donations to the SFP
  • Requiring all major suppliers to upload information to the SFP metric system that grades all suppliers for sustainable sourcing practices
  • Actively working with the GAA to improve current BAP two-star suppliers to four stars
  • Meeting with industry partners and petitioning government councils and officials for stricter regulations and habitat protection
  • Keeping abreast of industry activity and nurturing partnerships by attending and participating in sustainability summits and conferences

Our Canned Tuna Policy

Giant Eagle is one of the first U.S. grocers to develop an ethical canned tuna policy. It is our goal to source tuna exclusively from healthy, well-managed stocks in fisheries using the most current environmentally and socially responsible methods for harvesting and bycatch reduction. We pledge that our canned tuna will be GMO and BPA free, and priced reasonably for our customers.

Gulf of Mexico Shrimp

We're dedicated to the improvement of the Gulf of Mexico Shrimp fisheries. Giant Eagle only purchases from forward-thinking fleets that are committed to going above and beyond to improve the fishery's impact on the environment and to be stewards of the Gulf's resources. Vessels that sell to Giant Eagle must have signed Conservation Covenants reflecting the additional, voluntary steps that the fishermen take to ensure ongoing conservation improvement in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fisheries. For example, the nature of catching shrimp in large nets results in other species of marine fish and wildlife getting caught as well. Our fleets are randomly audited to ensure they are properly using the best available gear to reduce the catch of other species. Many of our vessels use new technologies such as lighter gears to reduce their overall environmental impact.

Meet Rich Castle, Seafood Director

Our Seafood Sustainability Program was developed and put into action by our Seafood Director, Rich Castle, a Giant Eagle Team Member for 37 years. Rich regularly participates in seafood sustainability round table discussions with top retailers, industry professionals and environmental experts from around the globe. Recently, Rich has:


  • Spoken with fishery suppliers at the 2015 SeaWeb Seafood Sustainability Summit and met with Greenpeace to discuss the state of sustainability.
  • Attended the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Global Outlook on Aquaculture Leadership conference.
  • Met with government officials in Thailand to discuss responsible sourcing.
  • Written (and continues to write) letters to government councils and officials asking for stricter regulations and habitat protection.
