Giant Eagle Becomes First Major Pittsburgh Supermarket Retailer to Launch Mobile Shopping App

New mobile application allows Waterworks Market District customers to save time by selecting and scanning items as they shop the store.

PITTSBURGH – Giant Eagle, Inc. has announced the launch of the Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper mobile application, the next generation of scan-as-you-go technology that allows customers to use their mobile phones to scan and bag their groceries while they shop. Currently being featured exclusively at the company’s Market District store in the Waterworks Shopping Center in Fox Chapel, plans are to bring the technology to three additional area Market District locations in Robinson, the South Hills and the Township of Pine in the coming weeks.

According to a recent New York Times study, Americans spend approximately 37 billion hours each year waiting in line. By dedicating an in-store register lane to only those customers using the Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper, the company has created a streamlined checkout process that eliminates the time customers otherwise spend waiting for themselves and others to have items scanned and bagged.

“The notion of the ‘traditional’ customer shopping experience no longer exists,” said Giant Eagle spokesperson Dan Donovan. “The challenge for retailers is to provide solutions for all of the ways customers want to interact with your brand and your products, and we believe that the Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper will become a popular option for those interested in using technology to take an added level of ownership in their shopping experience.”

Giant Eagle is the first major supermarket retailer in western Pennsylvania to offer a mobile, in-store shopping experience where customers can shop, tally and check out through their mobile phones. Available for download on both iPhone and Android devices, the new app allows customers to easily scan the barcodes on grocery products, and enter PLU numbers for products that need to be weighed at new, dedicated scales.

The Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper mobile app is linked to a customer’s Giant Eagle Advantage Card, streamlining the utilization of savings opportunities such as weekly sales and clipped digital coupons, as well as the earning of fuelperks! rewards. After shopping the store, customers simply scan a bar code on the screen of the dedicated Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper register, and the entirety of their shopping order is loaded and ready for payment. At this point, the register walks customers through the payment process as it does for all traditionally shopped orders. Paper coupons may be redeemed, and all forms of tender are accepted. Additionally, a Team Member will always be available to assist in processing purchases of gift cards and age-restricted items.

For those customers who want to take advantage of the mobile shopping experience but do not have the Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper app, the Waterworks Market District also offers handheld units that provide the same, time-saving convenience.

The Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper app is the latest in a suite of innovative time-saving, technology-driven shopping solutions offered by the company at its Giant Eagle, Market District and GetGo locations. The recent evolution of the company’s Curbside Express service to offer both home delivery and curbside pick-up has been very popular with customers. Additionally, the mainstay Giant Eagle mobile app features eGift Cards and GetGo mobile ordering, each providing a true what you want, when you want it experience.

With eGift Cards, Giant Eagle customers are able to select, pay for and redeem electronic gift cards for more than 150 retailers for immediate use no matter where they are, making earning fuelperks! on retailer gift card purchases more convenient than ever. The GetGo mobile ordering feature allows customers planning to visit any one of multiple southwestern Pennsylvania GetGo kitchen locations to order from the entire GetGo café menu, ranging from made fresh to order subs, burgers and salads to an array of hot and cold drinks, pay for their order remotely and have the food prepared and available at a time of their choosing.

“We believe the savviest Giant Eagle customers will use our various, technology-driven services interchangeably,” added Donovan. “A customer that prefers using Curbside Express for his or her larger weekly shopping order may find the Giant Eagle Mobile Shopper useful for fill-in trips. Likewise, customers may scroll through available eCoupons via our mainstay Giant Eagle mobile app while in-store using our new Mobile Shopper app. The goal for us is to equip our customers with an array of unique and helpful tools.”
