Learn From The Pros
We asked our Corporate Director of Culinary Excellence, John Beardsley and Research and Development Chef, Emily Newmark for their tips and tricks for better baking. Here’s what they said:
Accuracy Is Key
Baking requires more accuracy than cooking, so the first step for first-time baking is investing in a trustworthy baking scale and measuring cup to measure all your ingredients before you start adding them together.
Check Your Temperatures
Just as important as measuring amounts, is making certain your oven is the correct temperature the recipe calls for by using your own thermometer since oven temperatures—especially on older ovens—can vary. You should also be sure you are using the correct temperature ingredients like “softened” butter or “room temperature” eggs.
Size Matters
It may seem obvious, but pay attention to the pan size required in recipes. Pans that are more shallow or deeper than needed may affect the bake time of your recipe and could result in over-cooking, under-cooking—or just plain ruining—your dish.
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment!
When it comes to baking, practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to try new ingredients or out-of-the-recipe-box ideas to take your bake to the next level. To really up the flavor, try doubling the salt and vanilla in recipes! Before long, your beginner baker days will be a thing of the past.
